EC328  Spring 2009

This page provides some basic information for students interested in taking EC328 (Educational Economics) in the Spring of 2009. Once the course starts, I will be using WebCT to post information.

The course will be similar in content and structure to EC228, which I last offered in Winter 2007. Since that time, the course has been changed to a third year course, and a requirement for some introductory statistics has been added.

The actual course may differ from the outline shown here. I am considering changing the assessment to put less weight on the final exam and more weight on in-semester work (with a corresponding increase in the amount of in-semester work expected).

A few things will remain the same, however. There will be no set textbook for the course. Students will therefore be expected to carefully follow the readings, the majority of which are articles from academic journals (available to students through the university's electronic journal subscriptions). There is only a relatively small focus on the theoretical side in the course. For most of the time, we will be looking at applied research - that is, research making use of data and statistics. Please note that it is possible to do well in the course without a knowledge of anything more than some elementary statistics, since I will be covering all statistical/econometric techniques used in some detail.
